At Her Home Friday

Funeral Services Monday; Five Children Survive

Mrs. Nellie Hughes, 79, died at 10 p.m. Friday at her home at 301 N. Broadway. She had been in failing health for two years and death was attributed to the infirmities of advanced age.

The body was taken to Larkin’s Chapel where rosary was recited Sunday evening. Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Monday from Saint Joseph’s church with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Emmet G. Kelly officiating.

Internment was in Calvary Cemetery with James Malloy, Howard David, Joe Te Kippe, Charles Cero, John Ball and William Hynes as pallbearers.

Nellie Kirk Hughes, daughter of Patrick and Bridget Noon Kirk was born July 3, 1875 at Lawler. She taught in the rural school system and met her future husband while teaching at the red brick school on Highway 18 west of this city. On April 18, 1899 she was married to Andrew A. Hughes at Lawler.

They established their home in New Hampton where she has resided since. Nine children were born to this union.

Mrs. Hughes was a member of Saint Joseph’s church, was a past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America, past President of the Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Relief Corps.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Olive) Barnes of Burlington, Mrs. Charles (Helen) Peterson of Webster City, Mrs. Cletus (Josephine) Offerman of Elma and Rosemary at home; one son Patrick of Waterloo, six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. James Beard of Charles City and Mrs. Charles Shepherd of Lawler and one brother, Elmer Kirk of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on October 13, 1942, two sons in infancy, a daughter, Kathleen in 1921 and a son, William in 1928.
