TIPTON.Samuel S. Wright, one of the prominent lawyers of Tipton, is a native of Iowa, born at Nashua, March 6, 1865, to Robert and Sarah (Gilliland) Wright, the father a native of England and the mother of Indiana. The father came to the United States in 1844, and during the same year located in Iowa, where he engaged in farming.
Our subject received his education in the Upper Iowa University, from which he graduated in 1886. For three years he was a principal in the public schools of Fayette, after which he entered the law department of Iowa State University, graduating therefrom in 1890. He immediately began practice at Tipton, and in the fall of 1890 was elected county attorney, serving for three terms in that capacity – until 1896. In 1891, with his brother, J. W. Wright (now mayor of Tipton), he formed the present firm of Wright & Wright. Mr. Wright has devoted himself assiduously to his professional practice, and is now ranked among the leading lawyers of his section of the state.
A Democrat in his political views, Mr. Wright has been active in the political work of his party. He was chairman of the Democratic State Convention in 1896, and as a stump speaker has been in demand. He is well known as a lecturer, and has delivered lectures before literary and other societies. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Upper Iowa University, and in 1898 was elected secretary of the State Bar Association at Iowa City. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias, and is legal adviser of the Fraternal Brotherhood of the World, of which organization his brother (J. W.) is president.
Mr. Wright was married, in 1895, at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, to Miss Anna Elwood, who is a graduate of the Cornell Conservatory of Music, and an elocutionist of some ability. They have one son, Roscoe Elwood.
