Mary Hoover Critchfield (1833 - 1909)

Mary Hoover Critchfield was born in Somerset County, Pa., June 19, 1833, and died at her home in Meriden, Iowa, September 15, 1909, at the advanced age of 76 years, 2 months and 26 days. She was married in 1860 to David Critchfield in Somerset County, Pa. Unto them was born eight children, six girls and two boys. Of these five daughters live to mourn the loss of a mother, the other three having preceded her across death’s river.

The family moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois in 1883. There they lived five years and then came to Iowa. The last fifteen years of her life were spent in Meriden, where she was known by all. She leaves an aged husband, who has been her faithful attendant at her bedside during her long sickness, which has lasted for over three years, she having been a constant sufferer during all of the time and five daughters as follows, Mrs. John Almont, Mrs. Manderville, Sioux Falls, S.D., Mrs. Leanord, Mrs. Brace, Cherokee, Iowa, Mrs. Bush, Seattle, Wash. All but the last named were in attendance at the funeral, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

She was a member of the Dunkard church since early life and was always a quiet peaceable neighbor and mother, living mostly within her own family.
The funeral was held Friday from the Presbyterian church. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.
