Bernard D. “Bernie” Kult, 74, of Cherokee, died Saturday, February 28, 2004, at his home, following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheroke. His body was cremated. Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, is in charge of arrangements.
Bernie was born April 28, 1929, in Carroll, to Bill and Gladys (Plumley) Kult. He graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Japan. In 1950, he married Elaine Happe in Carroll. He retired from Mid-American Energy (formerly Iowa Public Service) after 45 years of service in the communities of Carroll, Ida Grove, Charter Oak, and Cherokee. He served as mayor of Cherokee for eight years.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bernie was active in community and fraternal organizations in all of the communities that he lived in. He was an avid carver, and enjoyed woodworking, making many things for his wife and children. He loved hunting, fishing, and golfing. He enjoyed card games with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine, seven children, Kenneth Kult, and his wife, Pat, of Council Bluffs; Randall Kult, and his wife Susan, of Ankeny; David Kult, and his wife, Tena, of Fairmont, Minn.; Jane Timmerman, of Des Moines; Mary Corbett and her husband, James of Ankeny; Anne Coulter and her husband Alan of Cherokee; Robert Kult, and his wife Leisa, of Marianville, Mo.; 14 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Also surviving is one brother, Bill Kult, and his wife, Kay, of Climax Springs, Mo. Six brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twin granddaughters at birth (Kathleen and Kathryn), grandsons Jerome Wolterman and Chris Wolterman; a brother, Gary Kult.
