Edna Lucille Hemingway died August 23, 1998, in Marquette, Mich. while traveling. A Service of Worship in Witness to the Resurrection and in Gratitude for the Life of Lucille Hemingway was held August 30, 1998, in the First Presbyterian Church of Iowa City, Iowa.
Lucille was born August 27, 1920, in Cherokee County, Iowa, the daughter of Gustaf and Hattie Halstrom Dahlgren. The valedictorian of Cherokee High School, Lucille earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls. She taught two years in Northwood, Iowa before moving to Iowa City. A dedicated teacher, Lucille taught first grade in the Iowa City school system for 26.5 years.
Lucille married Elmer E. Hemingway of West Branch on July 7, 1951, in Iowa City. They farmed in northeast Johnson County until 1984 and moved to Iowa City in 1986. She was very active in a number of school, church and community activities. Lucille was an avid letter writer, loved to travel and enjoyed gardening and her family.
Lucille is survived by her husband and children: Sarah Ferneding of Omaha, Neb.; Susan and Allen Artmann of East Hanover, New Jersey; Mark and Cindy Hemingway of Des Moines; Paul and Donna Hemingway of Iowa City; Jane and Robert Quaintance of Byron, Minn.; Martha Ann and Andy Schwandt of Fort Dodge; and Scott and Jennifer Hemingway of Ames. Her nine grandchildren are: Daniel and Nora Ferneding; Jon, Emily and Loren Hemingway; Katherine Quaintance; Aaron and Mitchell Schwandt; and Jacob Hemingway. She is also survived by her sister Ruby and her husband Bill Curtis of Storm Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Eldon.
