Funeral services for Joseph A. Sivinski were held Monday, Sept. 21 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with full military honors.

Joseph Andrew Sivinski was born in Ashton, Neb. on Sept. 23, 1934, to Ignatz and Anna (Smedra) Sivinski. He graduated from the Meriden High School in 1951. Joe served in the Army Air Corp from 1953 till 1955. He married Colette Rasmus on Nov. 19, 1955 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cherokee. Joe farmed all his life, starting at Deed Dairy in the early years and in later years he sold Davis Seed Corn. Joe was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and district governor of the Lion’s Club International from 1983 to 1984 where he received the Melvin Jones award. He was also leader of the 4-H Club and served as a Cherokee County Township trustee. Joe loved camping, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling.

Joe died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at the Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake following a brief battle with cancer.

Survivors include his wife Colette of Cherokee; four children: Lynda and her husband Steve Best of Brayton, Iowa; Jeff and his wife Nancy Sivinski of Cherokee; Kristi Holton of De Soto, Kan., and Joel and his wife Penny Sivinski of Alta; fourteen grandchildren: Wendi, Lindsay and Whitney Henke; Abby, Sara and Jodi Best; Andrew, Ivy and Staci Sivinski; Ryan, Matthew and Emily Holton; and Nicole and Paige Sivinski; three sisters: Mary Ann Heis of Junction City, Kan., Carla and her husband Charles Hines of Lincoln, Neb., and Barbara and her husband Norman Rupp of Cherokee; three brothers: Adrian and his wife Ava Sivinski of Omaha, Neb., Jack and his wife Krystyna Sivinski of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jim Sivinski and Judy Olsen of Minneapolis, Minn.; and nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
