The community of Silver was saddened by the loss of one of its pioneer settlers and a devoted mother, Mrs. Mary Drake, who quietly passed away at her home, July 25, 1916.
Mary Elizabeth Hagar, daughter of W. R. and Hannah Hagar, was born in Bradford County, Pa., April 13, 1854. When four years of age she moved with her parents to Jones County, Iowa. She was united in marriage with Nathan F. Drake, December 25, 1873. To this union were born five children: Edgar N., Julia E., James G., and Susie M., all of whom survive and Bernice H., who passed away in infancy.
At the age of fourteen she was converted and united with the Wesleyan Methodist church of which she has ever since been a faithful member. In March, 1884, she moved with her husband and family to the farm where she has since resided.
On May 24, 1904, her husband preceded her to the other world. For the past eighteen years she has been an invalid, and constant sufferer, always bearing her pain without a murmur. On June 12, she was seized with an attack of pneumonia which culminated in a complication of diseases, and on July 2, she left this earthly abode.
Funeral services were held from the M. E. church at Silver, and interment was made at the Silver Creek cemetery. (Source: The Cherokee Times, Thurs., Aug 3, 1916, pg. 4)
