Bertha R. Kinzel, 85 of Spencer and formerly of Cherokee, died Friday, September 11, 1998 in the Spencer Municipal Hospital following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 15 at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee. Burial will be in the Meriden Cemetery.

Bertha was born on August 20, 1913, in O’Brien County to Charles and Rachel (Ehlers) Stroman. She was married to Arthur S. Kinzel on May 1, 1937 at Paullina. The couple resided in the Cleghorn vicinity for a number of years where they farmed and Bertha worked as a bookkeeper for the Farmer’s Co-Operative Elevator. In 1966, they purchased a motel in Park Rapids, Minn. After her husband died in 1969, she sold the motel and returned to Rockwell City, Iowa where she managed the Sunnyview Retirement Home for 13 years. Upon her retirement, she returned to Cherokee where she lived until entering Longhouse Residence at Spencer in August of 1997. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cherokee.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, Harold, and two sisters, Edith Brandt and Lena Bruns.

She is survived by one sister: Luella Ducommun and her husband Frank of Cherokee; two sister-in-law’s: Lilas Goodrich of Cleghorn and Vernace Miller and her husband Charles of Marcus; and many nieces and nephews.
