Loyal M. Martin, 88, former Cherokee city attorney, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at his residence in Cherokee following a lengthy illness.

Services will be Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars L. A. Wescott Post 2253.

Mr. Martin was born June 20, 1912, in Granville, Iowa, the son of Nicholas and Susan (Even) Martin. He attended school in Alton, Iowa, and graduated from Alton High School. He graduated in 1934 from Creighton University Law School in Omah. In 1935 he was admitted to the Iowa Bar Association.

He married Claudene Smith Oct. 11, 1940, in Cherokee. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Following his discharge, he returned to Cherokee. In 1948 he opened his own legal practice. He was the originator of the Cherokee County U.S. Army Reserves. He served as Cherokee city attorney from 1954 to 1964. His wife died March 8, 1998.

He served as a former president of Cherokee Rotary Club and former president and secretary of Cherokee Country Club. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing and won the Sioux Valley Golf Tournament three times.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Claudia Sue and Ted "Chip" Ellis of Brester, Mass.; a son, Mark of Cherokee; and four grandchildren, Timothy and Jennifer Ellis and Nicholas and Michael Martin.
