Wayne H. Johnson, 69, of 5 Sioux Valley Drive, Cherokee, died Sunday, January 28, 2001, in Desert Regional Medical Center, in Palm Springs, California.
Services will be held Saturday at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee. Rev. Ray Kruger will officiate. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden. Visitation will be held Friday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., with the family present from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee.
He was born December 22, 1931, in rural Cherokee to Arthur and Edith (Olson) Johnson. Following the death of his parents, he was raised by his grandparents and later an aunt and uncle, Ben and Edith Olson. He attended school in Meriden, graduating from Meriden High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years, during the Korean War. On September 28, 1957, he married Eleanor Halstrom in Meriden. Wayne worked for Wilson Foods in Cherokee, for many years, retiring in 1989. He also worked at the Cherokee Country Club until November in 2000. He was engaged in farming throughout his life.
Wayne was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and on the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the V.F.W., Cherokee Country Club and U.S.G.A., and also served on the Board of Adjustment. His interest involved golfing, Hawkeye sports, farming, his family, Little League and Boy Scout Programs.
Survivors include his wife, 2 sons, Curt Johnson and his wife, Julie, and their children Katrina and Phillip, of Spirit Lake; Craig Johnson and his wife Debra, of Urbandale; 1 daughter, Cara Jacobson, and her husband, Michael of Meriden; 4 brothers, Galen Johnson, and his wife Karen of Winchester, Oregon; Laverne Lundell, and his wife, Sally, of Kearney, Nebraska; Arthur Johnson, of Atlanta, Georgia; Darrell Johnson, of Kearney, Nebraska; 1 sister, Lorraine Grosbeck, of Jacksonville, Florida; Wayne was raised with special cousins, Donny Olson, Marie Olson Stanley, Mary Olson and Janet Olson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister (Alva Rapp), 1 brother (Oscar Nord); special cousin June Olson Story and several aunts and uncles.
