A.J. “Simmy” Byerly, 82, of Cherokee and former long-time California resident, died Monday, March 26, 2001 at 2:55 p.m. in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be held Saturday March 31, at 10 a.m. at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Red Bluff, Calif. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee is in charge of local arrangements. The Hall Bros. Corning Mortuary is in charge of arrangements in California.

He was born July 20, 1918, in Quimby, to Jess and Katherine (Stroud) Byerly. He was married to Dorothy Fierk on Jan 1, 1941, in Storm Lake. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Field Artillery. He had worked as a security guard, a forest patrolman and was a self-employed entrepreneur. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post # 3909 of Los Molinos, Calif. He had lived in Cherokee the past two years, prior to this in Los Molinos and Red Bluff, Calif.

He is survived by: one son and one daughter, Frank Byerly and his wife Kathy of Eagle River, Alaska, Francine Gipson and her husband Les of Gilbert, Ariz.; three grandsons, Corey LaCosta and his wife Kaela of Palmer, Alaska, Todd Byerly of Corvallis, Ore., and Cole Byerly of Minneapolis, Minn.; one granddaughter, Angela Houston and her husband David of Anchorage, Alaska; two great grandchildren, Tyler and Katelyn Houston; two brothers, Kenneth Byerly and his wife Viola of Cherokee, and Jay Byerly and his wife Kathy of Seattle, Wash.; one sister, Louise Clark and her husband Alex of Janesville, Wisc.; his companion of two years, Edith Byerly Streed of Cherokee; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy in 1976; one brother, Joseph Byerly; and one sister, Genevieve Day.
