Leonard E. Olson, 88, of Cherokee, died Saturday, May 11, 2002 at the Cherokee Villa following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Pastor Richard Arndt will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Visitation was Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Leonard was born Oct. 24, 1913 in Plymouth County to Otto and Caroline Hattie (Hoeppner) Olson. He attended schools in Remsen Township in Plymouth County, Iowa. He was married to Emily Phipps on Nov. 27, 1934 in Storm Lake. His home was at 309 Tapley lane. He had been a resident of Cherokee County practically all his life. He had worked for Baumann’s Bakery, had worked construction on the Alcan Highway in Alaska and had been employed by the Illinois Central Railroad for a few years. In later years he owned and operated Olson Transfer in Cherokee, retiring in 1976. He became a resident of the Cherokee Villa in September 2001. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, pitching horse-shoes, fishing and was a nature enthusiast. Following his retirement, he continued his enjoyment of fishing at his cottage on Spirit Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Merlyn Olson, William “Bill” Olson and Donald Olson; four sisters Clara Williams, Viola Brownmiller, Mary Joyce Olson and Dorothy Olson.

He is survived by his wife Emily, one son and one daughter: Jack Olson and his wife Dorothy of Cherokee, Janne Johnson and her husband Ron of Cherokee, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three brothers: Harold and Josephine Olson of Storm Lake; Francis and Pat Olson of Cherokee; Virgil Olson of Minneapolis; five sisters: Anita and George Nelson of Cherokee; Evelyn Scott of Cherokee; Luella Cipperley of Holstein; Margaret and Thomas Patris of San Diego, Calif.; Darlene Milbrodt of Sioux City; a sister-in-law Betty Olson of Cherokee; a brother-in-law Marvin and Boneta Phipps of Cherokee; also many nieces and nephews.
