Donald F. Olson, 70, of Cherokee, Iowa died Wednesday February 17, 1999 at 10:47 p.m. in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 23, at 2 p.m. from the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Pastor Richard Arndt will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Military rites will be held at the graveside by L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with the family present in the evening from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home.

He was born August 17, 1928 in Cherokee, Iowa to Otto and Hattie (Hoeppner) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He attended Cherokee Schools. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army for 10 years and awarded the Bronze Star. He had worked for Alton’s Grocery Store many years ago. He had been a resident of Cherokee since 1991 and prior to this lived in Glendale, Arizona. He was a life member of L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by four brothers and five sisters: Leonard and Emily Olson of Storm Lake, Iowa; Harold and Josephine Olson of Storm Lake, Iowa; Francis and Patricia Olson of Cherokee, Iowa; Virgil Olson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Anita and George Nelson of Cherokee, Iowa; Evelyn Scott of Cherokee, Iowa; Luella Cipperley, of Holstein, Iowa; Margaret and Thomas Patris of San Diego, California; Darlene Milbrodt of Sioux City, Iowa; also two sister-in-laws: Betty Olson of Aurelia, Iowa and Paulette Olson of Des Moines, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Merlyn Olson and William “Bill” Olson, and four sisters.
