Aurelia, Iowa – John “Jack” Grapenthen, 84, of Aurelia died Tuesday in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee after a brief illness.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia. The Rev. David Oswald will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Grapenthen was born May 9, 1899 in Brooke Township, Buena Vista County and was raised on a farm near Peterson. He married Lillie Ruebsam March 14, 1923, in Cherokee County. She died Feb. 19, 1983. They made their home in Aurelia where he operated a café, sold automobiles, drove a school bus for many years and had been director of People’s Telephone Co. for 43 years.

Survivors include nephews and nieces.
