Herman Kamradt

Herman Carl Kamradt died at Spencer Hospital, Monday morning May 27th, 1957. He was 72 years old at the time of his death and was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Spencer at this time.

He was born in Pommzra, Germany, March 2, 1885, and came to America with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Kamradt when three years old and settled at Marcas, Ia. As a young man he found employment at Merrill, Iowa where he met and married Gesine Von Hagel in 1907. He farmed in this locality for 26 years always active in church and rural activities.

In 1918 his wife died during the serious influenza epidemic. His mother came to live and care for his six small children. In 1920 he married Pauling Von Hagel of Merrill who with the six children survive.

In 1934 they purchased a farm at Sutherland, Iowa. Here he was a member of the board organizing a new congregation and building a chapel the Bethel Lutheran Church. In 1949 they retired in their new home at Spencer, Iowa.

Eight years ago he was injured in an auto accident a stroke followed paralyzing his right side making him a semi-invalid. All this time his wife tenderly cared for him till lost Tuesday evening he was suddenly stricken with another stroke leaving him unconscious till the time of his death the following Monday morning. His wife and all his children were at his bedside till the last.

Those who survive are his widow, four daughters, two sons, 15 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 3 brothers Otto of Sioux City; Rudolph of Akron and Paul of St. Petersburg, Florida.

His parents, 1 sister and 1 brother preceded him in death.

Services were held in the First Lutheran Church at 1:30 Thursday with Rev. L. W. Stefen officiating. Interment was at 4:15 in the Johnson Township Lutheran Cemetery at Merrill with Warner Funeral Home in charge. Soloist Mrs. R O. Ross; Organist: Mrs. Victor Winkleman. Pallbearers were his nephews.
