CHEROKEE, Iowa - Charlene R. Fulton, 48, of Cherokee died Friday at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital at Cherokee, due to complications from cardiac arrest suffered last week in Des Moines, Iowa.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Gary Armstrong officiating. The body was cremated. Visitation, with the family present, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Mrs. Fulton was born Jan. 18, 1949, at Conesville, Iowa, to Charles and Ruth Buser. She graduated from Columbus Community High School in 1967. In 1971, she graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, and was certified to teach English in grades 7 through 12 and Spanish in grades K through 12. This past year, she began her post graduate work as a computer specialist for grades K through 12.
She married Brian Fulton Aug. 16, 1971. The couple enjoyed planting trees in their habitat area, called Hundred Acre Woods.

She was a member of the Cherokee Community School Board of Directors from 1986 to 1995, president of the school board from 1989 to 1992, the Iowa Association of School Board's District Director from 1993 to 1996, and the Iowa State Extension Council from 1994 to 1997. She was also a member of the Siouxland Symphony Board, and was recently appointed by Terry Brandstad to the Iowa State Board of Education.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Joe of Iowa City, Iowa; two daughters Katie and Ruby, both of Cherokee; her parents of Conesville; four brothers, Lamoyne and his wife Janice Buser of Conesville, Loren of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Raymond and his wife Sally Buser of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Dr. Boyd and his wife Pam Buser of Kennebunkport, Maine; three sisters and their husbands, Bev and Steve Nielsen of Columbus Junction, Iowa, Sandy and Terry Schatzberg of Cedar Falls, and Suzie and Rob Williams of Kansas City, Kan.

Memorials may be given to the Cherokee Community School Strings Program.
