John D. Blake, one of Aftons most respected citizens died of lung fever at his home in Afton Township of Cherokee County Iowa, March 18th, 1884. He was a son of Col. C.D. Blake of Dorchester, N. H., at which place he was born in Sept., 1841. He came to this county fifteen years ago next June, and has been a resident of Afton Township since. He was a kind and loving husband, an indulgent father, a good citizen, and a true friend, beloved and respected by all. Mr. Blake served three years in the twelfth New Hamshire regiment during the war of the rebellion, receiving a shot through the hip. Besides his honorable discharge, he received from the authorities of the State of New Hampshire a testimonial of the faithful performance of his duty as a soldier, signed by Nate Head, adjutant Gen., And Frederick Smyth, governor.

On the occasion of the funeral which took place on Fri. Mar. 21st. 1884 Rev. Chase, of Cherokee preached a very acceptable sermon from Mathew 24th, chapter 42 3 4th verse to one of the largest congregations ever covened in Afton Township on any similar occasion.

He is surived by his widow, Louisa Perkins Blake and his two children, Fred Lincoln Blake and Edith Blake
