Joseph Henry Vine was born in Grant county, Wisconsin, August 12, 1854, and departed this life April 8, 1926, at the age of 71 years, seven months and 25 days. He lived with his parents in Grant county till he moved to Iowa in 1885, where he has spent his years since that time. He was united in marriage to Rozella Todd October 28, 1880. God blessed this union with one son and six daughters. He united with the primitive M. E. church at Big Patch, Wis., and later became a member of the Presbyterian church at Cleghorn, of which he was an elder until the time of his death. He was also a member of the Masonic order and the Odd Fellows, and one of the earliest settlers of this section of the country.
He leaves to mourn, his beloved wife Rozella Vine; daughters Essie Hessenius of Long Beach, Calif.; Florence Levitt, Olive Hanson and Retta Vine of Cleghorn, Iowa; and Mamie Skaggs of South Dakota; one son, Elmer, of Cleghorn; a daughter, Bertha Elizabeth preceded her father in death January 28, 1911. He also leaves two brothers Ambrose Vine and George Vine; two sisters, Mrs. Peter Long and Mrs. Sarah Whittaker; 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild, besides a host of friends and relatives.
The loss of this beloved father and husband will be more than can be described, as he always proved not only faithful to his family but very devoted, sincere, and loving. the church which he so faithfully served will regret his departure and miss his kind words of advice and loyal service.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, April 11, at the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. Wm. Caldwell, assisted by Rev. C. W. Roll. Both the Masons and Odd Fellows were in attendance, the Masons giving their Masonic rites at the cemetery. A quartet consisting of Miss Woodcock, Vivian Pierce, Mrs. Dave Gowan and Walter Nafziger sang several hymns. A niece of the deceased, Elinor Long, sang a contralto so, “In the Garden.” Pall bearers were Anton Schaffer, C. H. Wilcox, Robert Habecker, Henry Specht, J. H. Smith, H. Means. those from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Skaggs of Sinai, S. D.; Ambrose Vine of Plattville, Wis.; Mrs. Peter Long and Elinor, of Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. G. Schnewr, Mr. and Mrs. W. Fortney, Mr. and Mrs. O. Fortney of Ft. Dodge; Mr. and Mrs. C. Blundell and son and daughter; C. Eggleston of Parker, S. D.; the John Holmes, Harry Miller, Luther Miller, Rich Altizer and C. K. Holmes families; Mrs. Rebecca Miller of Marcus; Mr. and Mrs. Will Bryant, Mr. and Mrs. Will McConnell. Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Wertz, Dan Lake, Mr. and Mrs. S. Lassen of Sioux city.
