LOTTIE JANE ADSIT
Lottie Jane Adsit, daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. William
Carrol Adsit, was born in Decorah.
Ia.. March 8, 1861. She
passed away at her home Oct.
23 at the age of 86 years.
The first 25 years of her life
were spent in Cherokee. During
that period she was prominent
in social, community and church
activities, being a member of the
Congregational church.
In 1897 she went to Great Barrington,
Mass., to reside with a
favorite uncle and aunt, Mr. and
Mrs. J P Pomeroy. While there
she was likewise acitive in community,
social and church circles,
she was presidents of the
Thursday Moring club. She also
gave outstanding leadership in
her work with children, serving
as superintendent of the primary
Department of the Sunday school
and Junior Christian Endeavor
society.
In 1937 she returned to Cherokee
to make her home with her
sister, Ruth, and her brother, the
late Wiliam Adsit.
The following poem, characteri-
zed of her nature, had a prominent
place on her desk:
"O brother man! Fold to thy
heart thy brother;
Where pity dwells, the peace of
God is there:
To worship rightly is to love
each other,
Each smile a hymn, each kindly
deed a prayer.
Follow with reverent steps the
great example
Of him whose holy work was
doing good:
so shall the wide earth seem our
fathers temple,
Each loving life, a psalm of
gratitude
—John Greenleaf Whittier.
Surviving are one sister, Ruth:
a brother, Ray. Cherokee; three
nephews, Laurence, Cherokee,
Louis, San Diego, Calif., Carroll,
Los Angeles, Calif.; two nieces,
Mrs. Howard Nelson, Aurelia,
and Elva Adsit, Huron, S. D.; two
grandnieces, Mrs. George Bowens
and Mrs. Caroline Cobb,
Royal Oak, Mich.
Funeral services were held
Saturday at 10 a. m. from the
Boothby funeral home, the Rev.
J. E. Feller officiating. Mrs. Ben
Abels sang "Abide With Me" and
"The Lord's Prayer," accompanied
by Mrs. Leo Kreykes.
Bearers were Charles Allison,
James Carey, Earl McKee, H. C
Snyder, H. O. True and Leonard
Wilson. Interment was in Oak
Hill cemetery.
