Adrian John "A.J." Goth

Adrian John “A.J.” Goth, 80, died Sunday September 6, 2009 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, Cherokee, Iowa, following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 8, 2009, in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 P.M.to 8:00 P.M. with a scripture service at 7:00 P.M. followed by a rosary at 7:30 P.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. The V.F.W., L.A. Wescott Post #2253, will conduct military graveside honors. On-line condolences may be sent to greenwoodfuneral.com.

Adrian John Goth, the eldest of 11 brothers and sisters was born to Rufus and Mary (Rotert) Goth on May 9, 1929, in Germantown, MO. His childhood years were spent in Germantown and it was there that he attended school until the eighth grade.

Following his schooling, Adrian moved to Marcus, IA, where he helped as a farm hand with the harvest. On September 19, 1950, Adrian was united in marriage to Helen Gravenish at the Maryhill Catholic Church. In June of 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as an MP stationed in Japan until his honorable discharge in May of 1953.

Adrian moved to Meriden in 1959. In 1961, he went to work for the Illinois Central Railroad. He started as a cook and worked his way up to Assistant Track Master and remained with the company for 28 years until his retirement in 1989.

Following the death of his first wife Helen in 1997, Adrian was united in marriage to Lois Robinson on September 29, 1999, in South Dakota.

Adrian was very active in Meriden where he served as the Meriden Fire Chief and Constable for 25 years. He was also a handyman who could fix anything. He enjoyed being able to help family and friends anytime he was able.

Through the years Adrian had many interest to keep him busy. He loved to grow the largest pumpkins for his grandchildren and had a longstanding yearly bet with Dr. Tim Menke on who could grow the largest pumpkins. Adrian remained undefeated! He also enjoyed being a beekeeper and had up to eight swarms. He was the official popcorn maker at Dave’s Repair as well as a master gardener. Adrian also enjoyed flea markets and auctions, but most of all he loved being around his family, especially his grandchildren.

On September 6, 2009, Adrian passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, IA, at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his first wife Helen Goth; granddaughter, Stacy Goth; his parents, Rufus and Mary Goth; one brother, Ralph Goth; one sister-in-law, Patricia Goth; and brothers-in-law Herbert Fechtel and Jerome Young.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lois Goth of Meriden, IA; his four children, Ron and Shannon Goth of Cherokee, IA, Roger and Kim Goth of Thornton, CO, Lori and Hal Hackbarth of Clear Lake, IA, and Craig and Lori Goth of Spirit Lake, IA; his stepchildren John Robinson and special friend, Judy of Gillette, WY, Doug and Judy Smith of Cherokee, IA, Jean and Dave Hind of Gillette, WY, Jim and Ann Robinson of Cherokee, IA, and Jeanette and Gary Lukins of Adel, IA; grandchildren Karly (Terry) Sindelar, Erin (Brandon) Corkish, Alison Goth, Olivia Hackbarth, Spencer, Hayden, and Lauren Goth; one great-grand-daughter, Jade Sindelar; 18 step-grandchildren; 31 step-great-grandchildren; five brothers Ehrle Goth of Montrose, MO, Wilfred Goth of Marcs, IA, Herbert (Sue) Goth of Warsaw, MO, Ludger (Lee) Goth of Montrose, MO, and Philip (Betty) Goth of Clinton, MO; four sisters: Rosemary Fechtel of Westalia, MO, Helena (Edward) of Deepwater, MO, Evelyn Young of Kansas City, MO, and Diane (Mike) Richter of Warrensburg, MO; four sisters-in-law: Melba Goth of Clinton, MO, Mary Sorgdrager of LeMars, IA, Thelma Gravenish of Marcus, IA, and Mary Gravenish Blair of Meriden, IA; as well as other relatives and many friends.
