Edna Hinspeter, 87, of Cherokee, passed away on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008 at Country Side Estates in Cherokee. Funeral services were held on Aug. 7 at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley, with Rev. Jeffrey Filkens officiating. Burial was at the Marcus Amherst Cemetery in Marcus.

Edna Klingbeil was born on Dec. 12, 1920 in Henry Township in Plymouth County, the daughter of F.A. and Christina (Ressen) Klingbeil.

She was raised in the Remsen, area and attended a one-room country school near her home. Edna then attended high school in Remsen for two years and transferred to high school in Le Mars where she graduated in 1939. She earned a normal training certificate allowing her to teach school. Edna taught in rural schools in Cherokee and Plymouth Counties for 12 years. During this time she also attended Western Union (Westmar) College in Le Mars.

Edna and Ira Hinspeter were united in marriage on June 23, 1951 at Remsen. The couple farmed northwest of Marcus on what now is a Century Farm. She assisted Ira on the farm with chores and feeding livestock.

She liked to visit with others. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and caring for her rose garden. She liked animals and enjoyed taking of her hogs and sheep.

Edna was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley, and belonged to the Dorcus Circle. She was Past Matron of the Marcus Chapter of the Eastern Star, a member of the Past Matron's Society, and held an office for 23 years. Edna was also a member of the Rose Croix Chapter (now the Morningside Rose Croix Chapter #502), a past representative of the Hawkeye Links, Mispa White Shrine of Jerusalem, Daughters of the Nile, the Kanduetes, Women's Auxiliary and the Hospital Moms. Edna served on the Red Cross board for over 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ira on Feb. 25, 1991; and two sisters.

She will be lovingly remembered by a niece, Donna Klungseth of Remsen; a nephew, Dale Witt and his wife Sandy of Spencer; a nephew, Ray Hansen and his wife Peg of Marcus; and many great nieces and nephews and friends.
