Duane "D.W." Homan, 80, of Cherokee passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, in a Wichita, Kan., hospital following a two-month illness.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Ethan Sayler officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Duane was born June 25, 1927, in Waverly, Iowa, to Carl and Ila (Johnson) Homan. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was married to Maxine Ritchie on April 20, 1952, in Waverly. He worked for the Iowa State Highway Patrol from 1954 until 1974. He was employed with Wilson Foods Corp. from 1974 until his retirement. He had lived in Cherokee since 1966, prior to this in Humboldt for 12 years and was originally from Waverly.

He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge at Waverly and the Iowa Firefighters Association. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, having coffee and time spent with friends.

He is survived by a son and his wife, Jim and Debra Homan of Wichita, Kan.; a daughter, Patty Schmitz of Gering, Neb.; three grandchildren, Shawn Homan of Columbus, Ohio, Danny Schmitz of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jennifer Schmitz of Torrington, Wyo.; four stepgrandchildren, Courtney, Zachary, Joshua and Matthew Martens; and four great-stepgrandchildren, Ashleigh, James, Blakely and Chloe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maxine on Oct. 24, 2005; and a brother, Mervin Homan.
