George H. Burch, 84, long-time Cherokee resident, passed away Tuesday evening, May 8, 2001 at his home at 812 W. Willow St. due to an apparent heart attack.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. from the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Rev. Gary Armstrong officiated. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. There was a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Sunday. Visitation was held on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present in the evening from 6:30 p.m. until 8p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home. L. A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. had military rites at the graveside.
George was born on July 20, 1916 at Pickering, Missouri to George H. and Myrtle L. (Harrington) Burch. He attended school in Pickering, Missouri. At the age of 16 he came to the Marcus, Iowa area and worked as a farmhand for several years. He was married to Thelma Irene Woodward on September 18, 1937 at Hampton, Iowa. He was a Veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Seebees. He also drove a truck for many years. He started the Cherokee Roofing Co. in September of 1967 which he owned and operated. He was a member of L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. in Cherokee. He enjoyed going fishing and camping.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son George Harold Burch Jr. in 1962, a daughter Mary Margaret Burch in infancy in 1939, 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma, 5 sons and 1 daughter: Wayne Burch and his wife Sheri of Omaha, Nebraska; Ronnie Burch and his special friend Karla Smith of Cherokee; Paul Burch and his wife Paula of Cherokee; Linda Berhow and her husband Bob of Garner, Iowa, Donnie Burch and his wife Marcia of Cherokee; Jery Burch and his special friend Alice Hare of Cherokee; 6 grandchildren;8 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
