Vernon R. Wester, 81, of rural Cleghorn, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at 4:35 a.m. at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, following a one year illness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church at rural Meriden. Rev. Clint Hogrefe will officiate and burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery at rural Meriden. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Vernon was born June 22, 1925 at rural Cleghorn to Elmer and Mabel (Anderson) Wester. He graduated from Cleghorn High School in 1943. He was married to Ruby Cedar on Sept. 2, 1952 at the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church. He was a Veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S Army in Germany. He had farmed all his life, living on a farm north of Cleghorn until August of 2005 when he entered the Heartland Care Center in Marcus. Vernon was a member of the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church. He was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby; one son and two daughters: Eric Wester and his wife Sara of Cleghorn, Joanne Petersen and her husband Gene of Cleghorn, Verdene Salem and her husband Dan of Carroll. Eleven grandchildren, Three brothers and Four sisters, Eleanor Lundell of Paullina, Roy Wester and his wife Elsie of Paullina, Dale Wester and his wife Pat of Cherokee. Lorraine Mortenson and her husband Robert of Cherokee, Rev. Merle Wester and his wife Eleda of Cherokee. Evelyn Kludas and her husband Karl of Cherokee. Jeanette Johnson and her husband Larry of Meriden, many nieces and nephews.
