—QUIMBY, Iowa -- Ethel E. Nelson, 95, of Cherokee, Iowa, former longtime Quimby area resident, passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Carolyn Hollar officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Quimby Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Ethel was born Dec. 27, 1910, in rural Quimby, to Eugene and Florence (Dearth) Parcel. She attended Quimby schools.
She was married to Nels R. Nelson on June 14, 1931, in Cushing, Iowa. The couple farmed until 1954, when Mr. Nelson passed away. She then worked for Simonsens for four years and returned to the American Academy of Cosmetology in Des Moines. She owned and operated Ethel's Beauty Shop in Quimby for 22 years, retiring in 1983. She had lived in the Quimby area for many years, moving to Cherokee in 1985.
She was a member of Quimby United Methodist Church,, the Sew-a-Bit Club, W.L.S. Study Club, Little Sioux Painters, Cherokee Area Artists, Iowa State Artists, Amateur Radio Operators, the Aurelia (Iowa) Senior Citizens and Dance Club. She enjoyed doing oil painting and dancing.
She is survived by a son, Rodney Nelson of Quimby; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Nelson of Cherokee, Iowa; and three grandchildren, Lisa Nelson of Des Moines, Laurel Nelson of Seattle, Wash., and Mark Nelson of Kingsley, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 21, 1954; an infant daughter, Mary Nelson in 1931; two sisters, Edna McCreary and Rachel Clark; and a brother, Jay Parcel.
