Ralph S. Hartwig, 85, of Cherokee died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at 12:40 p.m. in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Pastor Gary Swick will officiate. There will be military rites at the funeral home on Tuesday immediately following the memorial service. Hartwig's remains were cremated. There will be no visitation. The family requests that memorials be made to the Cherokee Public Library.

Ralph was born on Sept. 17, 1920 in O'Brien County to Albert and Ella (Stieneke) Hartwig. He graduated from Aurelia High School in 1939. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Army. He had farmed all his life retiring in 1985. He was a member of the American Legion at Aurelia, Iowa and the Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John Hartwig, and a brother Dean in infancy.

He is survived by two sisters and one brother: Ruth Klotz and her husband Bill of Ankeny; Joyce Stead and her husband Ivan of Surprise, Ariz.; Robert Hartwig of Cherokee; one sister-in-law: Dorothy Hartwig of Aurelia; four nieces and nephews: Peggy (Loren) Kolpin of Grinnell; Shirley (Dave) Pierce of Aurelia; Dr. Stan (Judy) Stead of Encino, California; Randy (Valene) Stead of Sammamish, Washington; 11 great nieces and nephews; 10 great great nieces and nephews.
