OBITUARY

Melwell M. Avery died at his late residence in Afton township Cherokee county, Iowa, March 17, 1892, of pneumonia, after but a week’s illness.

Mr. Avery was born in Corinth, Vermont, August 1, 1829. He was one of a family of nineteen children, of whom only one now survives. He was married on October 8, 1850, to Miss Abby M. Robie of Corinth, Vermont. Four children were born to them, three sons and one daughter, of whom there are now living Dr. Milo Avery of Aurelia, Mr. Robie Avery of this county, and Mrs. Abbie Brown of Monona county, Iowa. In 1866 Mr. Avery with his family moved to Tama county, Iowa. In 1883, they moved to Monona county, Iowa where they made their home until about two years ago when they moved to Afton township, Cherokee county, where they resided at the time of Melwell’s death.

Mr. Avery was converted and baptized in to the Freewill Baptist church in his native town at the age of (unreadable)teen. Though at different times living where he could not have church privileges yet he maintained his Christian way to the end and died trusting in his Savior.

Mr. Avery leaves a wife, two sons one daughter and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his departure. He was a loving husband, a kind father. He was esteemed ad respected by all who knew him. In his death the community loses a good citizen and a kind neighbor. The funeral services were held at the First Baptist church of Cherokee March 20th, conducted by Rev. J.W. Neyman, assisted by Rev. McCaffree.

The remains were interred in Oak Hill cemetery.
