The Cherokee Democrat, April 13, 1892

IN MEMORIAM

Died, at her home in Meriden on the 19th of March, 1892, aged, 65 years, 1 month, 13 days, Mary Jane Johnson nee Wheat.

Mary Jane Wheat was born in Hornby, Steuben county, N.Y. on February 6, 1827. Her parents deciding to move further west, the journey from New York to Illinois was made in a covered wagon in the year 1847. In 1848, she was married to Harvey E. Johnson, who took a homestead on which the next forty years of her life were spent. While here six children were born, two of whom died in infancy. And from the old homestead, her husband was buried in 1887. Her children having moved to the state of Iowa, she came to this state in June 1888, making her home in Meriden. Her life quiet, unobtrusive, religious, but the last year, suffering much, was spent in our midst patiently resigned to the will of God until he called her on the 19th of March. The funeral service was conducted in the M.E. church by S.G. Jones, who spoke impressively from the fourth verse of the twenty-third Psalm. The weather was most unfavorable but the large concourse of people who assembled manifested the high regard she was held in the community. She leaves four children, DeForest of Cherokee, Mrs. Florence Baker, Franklin and Addie Johnson of Sheridan township. In early life she joined the Presbyterian church but on her married united with the Baptist church with her husband, but deeper than her union with church was her union to Christ whose blissful presence she has gone.
