DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS
Andrew Melrose (army serial No. 1210143), corporal, Company D, 107th Infantry, 27th Division. For extraordinary heroism in action near Vendhuile, France, September 28, 1918. Leaving the protection of a trench, he crawled out under heavy machine gun and snipers' fire and rescued a British officer who had fallen in an exposed position. His example was an inspiration to the men serving with him.

Residence at enlistment: Marcus, Iowa
