by Thomas McCullaRICHARD NELSON.
Richard Nelson, the owner of an excellent farm of one hundred and twenty acres on sections 35 and 36, Afton township, is meeting with a gratifying and well merited measure of success in his undertakings as an agriculturist. His birth occurred in Carroll county, Iowa, in 1869, his parents being Hans and Boleta Nelson, of whom more extended mention is made on another page of this work in connection with the sketch of August Nelson, twin brother of our subject.
Richard Nelson, who was brought to Cherokee county by his parents when but six months old, here acquired his education and remained under the parental roof until he had attained his majority. When twentyone years of age he began cultivating rented land and was thus busily engaged until 1898, when he purchased a tract of one hundred and twenty acres from his father on sections 35 and 36, Afton township, where he has carried on farming pursuits to the present time. The property is now well improved and has been brought under a high state of cultivation. Mr. Nelson likewise owns eighty acres of improved land in Kingsbury county, South Dakota, and is widely recognized as one of the substantial and enterprising citizens of his community.
In 1894 Mr. Nelson was joined in wedlock to Mrs. Mary Nelson, a daughter of Henry H. and Susan Dieterich, who are mentioned at greater length on another page of this volume in connection with the sketch of L. C. Dieterich, a brother of Mrs. Nelson. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Nelson have been born two children, namely: Corvin, whose birth occurred in 1896; and Howard A., whose natal year was 1901.
In his political views Mr. Nelson is a republican but not bitterly partisan, always considering the capability and fitness of a candidate as of more importance than his party affiliation. He and his family are Congregationalists in religious faith. In the county where practically his entire life has been spent he is well and favorably known, having a circle of friends which is almost coextensive with the circle of his acquaintances.
