MASON CITY -- Francis W. Cooling, 89, of 520 13th St. S.E., Mason City, died Wednesday (June 26, 1996) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. James Hayes, associate pastor, celebrating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Dougherty.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. There will be a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service and a 7:30 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary.

Francis William Cooling was born March 4, 1907, in Strawn, Ill., the son of Charles and Florence (Todd) Cooling. He moved to the North Iowa area when he was a young boy.

On Dec. 1, 1928, at St. John's Catholic Church in Cartersville, Iowa, he married R. Aileen Coyle.

The couple made their home in the Cartersville and the Dougherty areas where Mr. Cooling farmed for nearly 30 years.In 1962, they moved to Mason City.

For 13 years, Mr. Cooling was a custodian at Hoover Elementary School in Mason City. He retired in 1975.

Mr. Cooling was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Mason City Council #1006, and the Mason City Moose Lodge.

Family was very important to Francis, as he especially enjoyed being near his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Aileen, of Mason City; Mrs. Frank (Ann) Weiner of Nora Springs, Iowa, Hugh and Velma Cooling of Albuquerque, N.M., Don and Marilyn Cooling, of Montrose, Colo., Jerry and Phyllis Cooling, of Mason City, Bill and Pearl Cooling, of Montrose, Colo., Kay Englehart, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mrs. Jerry (Judy) Conner, of Lafayette, Ind.; two sisters-in-law, Julia Cooling of LeGrand, Iowa, and Hazel Cooling of Mason City; 21 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Alvin, Arthur, Eldon and Albert Cooling; two step-sisters, Lillian Freeman and Dagmar Correl, one daughter-in-law, Della Cooling; and one great-grandson, Adam Hanig.
