ROCKWELL - Michael D. Schmitt, 42, of 20411 140th St., died Friday (Aug. 8, 1997) at his residence.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Stephen L. Meyer celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel of the Sacred Heart Parish Center, 316 Third St. North. There will be a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. tonight. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the chapel. Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 Third St. S., is in charge of arrangements.

Michael Dean Schmitt was born Dec. 6, 1954, in Mason City, the son of Edward Nicholas and Pauline Eleanor (Quade) Schmitt. He attended grade school at Sacred Heart Elementary in Rockwell, and graduated from Newman Catholic High School in Mason City in 1973. He joined his parents in the operation of the family farm immediately after high school, and remained there until his death. Michael was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and was a former member of the Iowa Pork Producers Association. Most recently, he steered the operation of the farm toward the production of beef cattle. Michael was just beginning to develop a collection of toy farm tractors.

Living family members include eight brothers and sisters, Gary Schmitt and his wife, Jeannette, of Rockwell, Janice Brighton and her husband, Ralph, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Trish Bean and her husband, Rod, of Johnston, Marlene Paulus and her husband, Al, of Chillicothe, Mo., Dianne Schmitt of Joliet, Ill., Jim Schmitt of Omaha, Neb., Leroy Schmitt and his wife, Beth, of Rockwell, and Kathleen Schmitt of Omaha, Neb.; 16 nieces and nephews; and one great-niece.

He was preceded in death by his mother, who died June 22, 1996, in Mason City; his father, who died Nov. 17, 1996, on the family farm, rural Rockwell; and one nephew, Andrew Bean.
