Earl was born the son of Levi and Electa (Parker) Varner, Sept. 22, 1931, in Charles City, Iowa. He attended Charles City school, then joined the United States Army and served in the Korean conflict from 1951 to 1954, when he was honorably discharged.

Earl then worked for Deckers for 24 years, as a welder until it closed. He then built and ran his own shop, Varner Repair, in Rock Falls, with his two sons, until he later sold the shop to Mike. He also worked for Libby Owens, AGP, and finally retired from IMI in 1993.

Earl loved to go on fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada with his family and friends, and to hunt, camp, snowmobile and do woodworking. He also enjoyed supporting the Twins and Hawkeyes, playing cards, going to the casinos and talking on the phone. Most of all Earl loved to spend time with his family.
