ANDY ROEDER

It is human to eulogize the dead, especially if death has come because of war. But the letter written by J. W. PRITCHARD of Wayland to the parents of Lt. Andrew ROEDER, Rockwell's first war casualty, definitely leaves the impression that Andy was worthy of the finest tributes.

"Andy," wrote PRITCHARD, "was the best - the most real friend I ever had. I could always depend upon him to be honest with me in any of our dealings or conversations . . . He, more than anyone, taught me the value of straightforward approach to life.

"He never thought of deceiving anyone either in word or in deed. He was a man in the truest and finest sense of the word. Courageous always, he never shirked his duty. He was loved by all who knew him well and respected by all with whom he came in contact.

"I know your loss seems almost too great to bear but we know it must be borne - and bravely as Andy would wish it. Of this we are certain - he died bravely, with a prayer on his lips and thoughts of his loved ones in his heart. We can live up to his standards only by meeting this tragedy with the utmost of courage and the faith that someday we will be with him again.

"Let's not try to forget. Let's remember him for all he way. Andy, the finest, the strongest and the most loyal son, brother and friend of all those he ever knew. His spirit shall live on in our hearts."
