COMMENDED BY GENERAL

St. Sgt. John J. KLEIN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry KLEIN, 239 S. E. Center street, Clear Lake, was commended by his superior officer, General KRAMER, for having the best kitchen in the division, it was revealed in a record issue of the camp paper at Camp Robinson, Ark. Sgt. KLEIN was also presented a silver identification bracelet by the boys in his company in appreciation of their mess hall.

KLEIN entered the service in December, 1940, and took training at Fort Crook, Nebr., and Fort Leonard Wood, mo., for 9 months. Later he was stationed at Camp Carson, Colo., and Camp Blanding, Fla. Several times he has been picked as a cadre and sent out to start a mess hall for a new division. He is known as mess sergeant.

Sgt. KLEIN was married Dec. 23, 1941, to Miss Delpha HUEY, whow was with him at his present station, Camp Robinson, near Little Rock, Ark., until he came home on a 10-day furlough, returning Monday. Mrs. KLEIN is remaining with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. HUEY, Hugh street, for the present.

KILLED IN ACTION

Mrs. John J. KLEIN received word Monday morning from the war department stating that her husband, S/Sgt. John J. KLEIN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry KLEIN, 239 S. E. Center street, of Clear Lake, was killed in action in the European theater. His wife is living in Clear Lake and is the former Delpha HUEY.

He entered the service in December, 1940,and took training at Ft. Crook, Nebr., Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., Camp Carson, Colo., and Camp Blanding, Fla.

PLAN SERVICES MONDAY FOR S-SGT. JOSEPH KLEIN, 30

Reported Killed on Christmas Day in European Area

Clear Lake - Requiem high mass will be held for S. Sgt. John Joseph KLEIN, 30, Monday morning at 9 o'clock at the St. Patrick's Catholic church with Rev. J. J. BUZYNSKI, pastor, officiating. His wife received word Monday from the secretary of war telling of his death on Christmas day while in action in the European theater. A confirming letter will follow.

S/Sgt. KLEIN is survived by his wife, the former Delpha HUEY, of Clear Lake, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry KLEIN, 209 South Third street, a brother, Cpl. Leo KLEIN in France, and 4 sisters, Marie KLEIN, R. N. at the Mercy hospital, Mason City; Bertha, Rosa and Margaret, at home.

S/Sgt. KLEIN was born in New Hampton, Dec. 14, 1914, living on a farm in that vicinity and at St. Lucas until he reached young manhood. He moved with his parents to Thompson and was graduated from the Thompson high school in 1932. Before entering the service he was employed at the Page & Crane Lumber Co., and the Surf ballroom.

He entered the army on Dec. 5, 1940, was inducted at Ft. Snelling, Minn., was stationed at Ft. Crook, Nebr., and Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He attained the rank of staff sergeant after he had been in the service one year. He was married to Miss Delpha Huey of Clear Lake on Dec. 24, 1941 at Des Moines.

His wife lived with him at Waynesville, Mo., while he was at Ft. Leonard Wood, and accompanied him to Camp Kit Carson, Colo., where he remained for 9 months. He was then moved to Camp Robinson at Little Rock, Ar., and to Camp Rucker, Ala., his wife accompanying him.

He was a sergeant in charge of mess and attached to the infantry.

He and his wife visited in Clear Lake in September, 1944, and he left for overseas in November, landing in England. His wife, who is now employed in the Mercy hospital, Mason City, received a letter from him dated Dec. 19, written from England.
