Six Men Enlisted in Company H;
Sergeant’s Son Becomes Corporal

Six new men have enlisted in Company H, 133rd infantry, Iowa national guard, according to Capt. Stuart N. Grummon, commanding officer of the local company.

They are Ilo L. Billings of Nora Springs, Robert D. Fowler of Clear Lake, John Muscovich of Mason City, Lester N. O’Rourke of Nora Springs, Clifford L. Wade of Thompson and Elburn L. Reed of Nora Springs.

Captain Grummon said that he has room for five or six more men in the company.

Most recent promotion in Company H is that of Kay H. Shorter, private first class, to the rank of corporal. Corporal Shorter is a son of First Sgt. George W. Shorter.

FINAL PLANS FOR NATIONAL GUARD
INDUCTION MADE

Final plans have been made for the induction of Mason City’s three national guard units Monday morning, Capt. S. N. Grummon, senior officer, said Saturday. Final drill before H company is mobilized was scheduled to be held at the local armory at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Captain Grummon, commander of the unit said.

Promotions in company H, to take effect Monday morning were also announced. . . . New corporals are the following privates first class: . . . Robert D. Fowler. . . .The advancements are being made to fill vacancies created by the large expansion of the company. . . .

Sgt. Fowler of Company H
Killed in Action in Italy

Left Mason City with National Guard, 1941;
Lived in Clear Lake

Sgt. Robert D. Fowler, member of Company H that left Mason City for Camp Claiborne [Louisiana] in February, 1941, was killed in action in Italy on May 28, according to information received from the war department by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Fowler, 3021 48th place, Des Moines.

Sgt. Fowler was president of the Water Safety corps while living in Clear Lake. He attended the junior college in Mason City and had attended the Davenport public schools. He was graduated from Green Bay, Wis., high school in 1939.

Sgt. Fowler had his last furlough home 32 months ago. He had spent more than a year in North Africa and was made reconnaissance sergeant in March of this year. He was engaged to marry an English girl in England.

He is survived by 3 sisters, Mrs. Merrill Hall of Des Moines; Mrs. G. G. Bedker of Carthage, Mo.; and Mrs. Arnold H. Becker of Goshen, Ind.
