Dougherty -- Funeral services for Jack DOUGHERTY, who died at Rockwell hospital Dec. 29 [1948], were held from St. Patrick's church in Dougherty Friday.
Officers of the solemn requiem mass were: the Rev. Gerald DOUGHERTY, Chicago, nephew of the deceased, celebrant; the Rev. Louis PUTZ, Waterloo, deacon; the Rev. R. S. BOHRER of Rockwell, sub-deacon, and the Rev. W. P. LEONARD of Waterloo, master of ceremonies. The Rev. P. J. MAGUIRE, pastor of St. Patrick's in Dougherty, gave the funeral sermon.
Present in the sanctuary were the Rt. Rev. E. J. DOUGHERTY of Waterloo, brother of the deceased; the Rt. Rev. J. M. MALLOY, Cedar Rapids; the Rt. Rev. T. J. ROONEY, Charles City; the Rt. Rev. D. J. LENIHAN, Cedar Rapids; the Rev. F. L. O'DONNELL, Britt; the Rev. Ivan BOYD, Mason City; the Rev. W. F. POWERS, Cedar Rapids; the Rev. V. C. MERFELD, Charles City.
Pallbearers were Bob DOUGHERTY, E. G. DOUGHERTY, Joe DOUGHERTY, Clarke DOUGHERTY, Ed RIGGINS, and William BOYLE, all of Dougherty; Jim DOUGHERTY of Chicago, and Everett DOUGHERTY of Mason City. All are nephews of the deceased.
John DOUGHERTY was born on July 1, 1863, the first white child born in Dougherty township and before Dougherty township was actually mapped out. His father, Daniel DOUGHERTY, for whom the town is named, was one of the first settlers in this area. John was the 6th in a family of 16 children.
After many years of farming Mr. DOUGHERTY entered the farm machinery business with his brother, James, in Dougherty from which he retired about 10 years ago. He was elected mayor of Dougherty . . .rest of obituary missing
NOTE: John "Jack" DOUGHERTY never married. His mother was Mary (GALLAGHER) DOUGHERTY. He was interred at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dougherty, Iowa.
