Mason City lost a good man Saturday afternoon, October 22, 2011, when Charles "Chuck" William McGreevey, 67, Chief Building Official/Building and Neighborhood Services Director, passed away unexpectedly at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.
A Memorial Mass will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 - 5th St., S.E. Mason City, IA, with Reverend Craig E. Steimel officiating. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, Iowa.
Chuck's family will greet family and friends Tuesday, October 25, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hogan-Bremer- Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 - 3rd St NE, Mason City. Memorials may be directed to the North Iowa Humane Society. (There is no viewing).
Chuck was born April 21, 1944, in Charles City, Iowa, the first and only son/child of Charles Robert and Mary (Deist) McGreevey. Charles R. was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany in 1945 when Chuck was about 10 months old. Mary later married Wayne Skyrme. They had a daughter, Terri.
Chuck attended elementary and high school in Charles City where he excelled in tennis, track, and wrestling. He was a "sprinter at heart" and in his freshman year he held the record (for several years) at Charles City High School in the 100 meter dash! His track team won the Drake Relays 400 meter in 1961, with a record that held for over 30 years! While playing high school football his junior year, his track career was cut short when he suffered a broken leg. Chuck lettered in tennis at the University of Northern Iowa where he was team captain; he also won the singles in match in 1961. He was a 3rd degree brown belt in karate.
July 12, 1969, Chuck was united in marriage to Karen Suzanne Miller from Des Moines, Iowa. They immediately moved to Cedar Falls so Chuck could finish his last semester of college at UNI. He graduated with a BA in Science. They then moved to Mason City, Iowa, and were blessed with a baby daughter, Tiffany Suzanne, March 16, 1971. Chuck worked briefly for the Dept. of Transportation, and then obtained employment, January 4, 1971, with the City of Mason City.
His diverse career with the City spanned more than four decades. (In fact, if you've owned a restaurant, a tavern, built a house, a garage, a shed or an industrial building, Chuck had a hand in the process in some way.) His first position with the City was inspecting restaurants and taverns! Later, he was the Housing Inspector, then transitioned to the Building Inspector, the Building and Inspections Supervisor, and the Chief Building Official and Inspection Services Director; a position he held at the time of his untimely death.
He was a member of the International Conference of Building Officials, the Iowa Association of Housing Officials, and the Architects, Engineers and Building Officials Section of the National Fire Protection Association.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 42 years, Karen, Mason City, "The Boys" - three "Man cat" fur-babies, Jonny, Mikey, and Billy; and a sister, Terry (Jambor) and her husband, Bob, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; a cousin, Jackie (Hogan) and her husband, Dennis, and their children, Connor, Riley and Brady, West Des Moines, Iowa ; Nicholas Van Patten, Des Moines; Ed and Sue McGreevey, Keokuk, Tom and Karla McGreevey, Keokuk, Iowa; Maureen McGreevey, LeClaire, Iowa; sister-in-law, Connie Lou Paulson and her daughter, Kathie Naylor, Des Moines, as well as numerous other cousins and their families. The staff in the Building and Neighborhood Services department are also an important part of Chuck's legacy.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Tiffany, who died shortly after birth, his father, Charles R.; his mother, Mary; his step-father, Wayne; both maternal and paternal grandparents; some uncles and aunts, also preceded Chuck, as did three "Man cat" fur-babies; Daniel, Cody and Bowie!
