Clear Lake - Wilbert Melvin "Swede" Nuehring, 74, of 1509 Southfield Place, Clear Lake, died Thursday (April 1, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour before services on Monday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Wilbert Melvin Nuehring Memorial Fund.

Swede was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Kanawha, the son of Otto and Ruth (Johnson) Nuehring. He attended school in Kanawha.

Swede served in the United States Army in World War II and during 1946-47 in the Military Police war crimes, Tokyo, Japan.

Swede married Marilyn Watts on Jan. 25, 1952, in Albert Lea, Minn. Swede spent his entire life farming around Mason City, Ventura and Clear Lake areas, retiring in 1989. He still enjoyed going out to the family farm and helping his son, Tim, farm.

He also enjoyed playing cards, traveling with his wife on many charter bus trips, spending his mornings at the Ventura Elevator drinking coffee, and in the afternoon, meeting his friends at McDonalds for coffee.

Swede was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, and a member of the Farm Bureau.

Swede is survived by his wife, Marilyn Nuehring, Clear Lake; mother, Ruth Nuehring, Mason City; three children, Tim Nuehring and his wife, Coral, Mason City, Kurt Nuehring and his wife, Kathy, Woodbury, Minn., and Becky Wood and her husband, Tom, of Garner; six grandchildren, Tania Nuehring, Zackery Nuehring, Racine Wood, Grant Wood, Emily Nuehring and Abigail Nuehring; two brothers, Orvall Nuehring and his wife, Virginia, of Mason City, and Bob Nuehring, Mason City; two sisters, Beulah Fairbanks and her husband, Richard, Mason City, and Alice Rowe, Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his father, Otto Nuehring; and one sister, Lucille Stakee.
