Thornton - Helen Johnson, 89, of Thornton, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Gochenouer officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery. Vistation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Grarup Funeral Home, Thornton.
Helen Johnson was born on Feb. 2, 1907, in Amenia, N.D., the daughter of Jules and Emma (Portner) Nicolet. She attended country schools in the Meservey and Thornton area before graduating from the Thornton High School. Following school, she attended the Institute for Business in Des Moines before returning to Thornton where she began working for the bank.
On Jan. 29, 1931, she was united in marriage to John Johnson in the Methodist Church parsonage in Thornton. They made their home farming first near Mason City before moving to the Thornton and Swaledale areas.
Following the death of her husband, she moved into Thornton in the fall of 1971.
Helen enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and needlework in her spare time. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Thornton.
She is survived by one daughter, Mavis Floy and her husband, Marius, of Thornton; two sons, Roger and his wife, Nola, of Hampton, and Robert and his wife, Judy, of Phoeniz, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Rose Nelson of Sheffield, Gladys Dixon of Mason City and Mable Oehlert of Rockwell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one daughter, four sisters and two brothers.
