Roger (Rudy) Suby, 88, of Mason City, passed away Monday evening, Sept. 28, 2015, at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Roger was born October 8, 1926, on the Joe Hill Farm in Grant Twp, Cerro Gordo Co, Iowa, to Henry and Iva (Kirk) Suby. He was the 3rd oldest of eight children. He married Colleen Joyce Burgess on June 29, 1947. To this union was born four children: Mark, Collette, Kirk and Jody.

Roger attended school in Fertile, Iowa, graduating in 1944. He jokingly boasted that he graduated 7th in his class of 7. He was a World War II Veteran, stationed in La Harvre, France and Bremerhaven, Germany. He worked for the Mason City Street Department for 40 years, retiring on “April Fool’s Day,” 1987.

In younger years, Rudy enjoyed watching baseball and boxing. He was an avid sportsman and loved the Vikings and the Hawkeyes. In recent years, he enjoyed watching tennis and golf on TV.

He loved playing cards, fishing and gardening, until the passing of his wife, Colleen, 8 years ago. Her death was a life changing event from which he never fully recovered. He was by her side throughout her long illness, caring for her and giving her the strength to make it through her painful days. For that, the family will always be grateful.

He treasured every moment with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They called him “Pops” or “Papa Rudy", nicknames that he loved.

He enjoyed more than 30 years of fishing trips to the family cabin in Minnesota, where he provided the family with many humorous stories to share about their adventures. These trips were also enjoyed by many members of the extended family.

He was a likeable guy, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and good neighbor to those who lived around him. He will be missed by all.

There will be no services, per his request.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Mark (Connie Bakken) Suby of Mason City; Collette Turner of Las Vegas, Nev.; Kirk (Val Schiff) Suby of Mason City; and Jody Sellon of Mason City. His nine grandchildren: Heather Suby of Holmen, Wisc.; Jason (Sarah) Suby of New Windsor, N.Y.; Amber (Todd) Eldridge of Mason City; Andrew Suby of Mason City; Ryan (Amy) Sellon of Mason City; Larkin (Jayson) Becker of La Crescent, Minn.; Courtney Sellon of La Crosse, Wisc.; Brecken Baker of Fort Collins, Colo.; and Eric Turner of Las Vegas, Nev. His ten great-grandchildren: Austin and Allison Eldridge; Ethan, Brock and Brynn Suby; Jaxon, Jacey and Kenadi Sellon; and Cole and Lily Becker. He is also survived by three brothers, Leon (Shirley) Suby, Boyd Suby, and Allen (Nadine) Suby, and two sisters, Linda (Tom) Price and Phyllis Clausen, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen, his parents, brother Robert “Buck” Suby, sister Helen “Dolly” Sparby, brothers-in-law Bill Clausen, Jack O’Neil and Alvin Sparby, sisters-in-law Delores Suby and Betty Suby, son-in-law Gary Sellon, and infant grandson, Adam Suby.
