Michael A. Despenas

Michael A. Despenas, 47, formerly of Mason City, passed away Wednesday (March 2, 2016) at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, surrounded by his loved ones.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday (March 8, 2016) at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania, Mason City, with Rev. Dan Gerrietts, officiating.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church, Tuesday. The family suggests memorials be given to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, 5452 NE 22nd St, Des Moines, Iowa 50313-7528, Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance, 533 W. Uwchlan Ave, Downington, PA 19335, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Michael Anthony Despenas was born April 12, 1968 at Mason City, a son of Chris and Lois (Schott) Despenas. He attended Mason City schools, graduating from Mason City High School in 1987, where he played hockey and golf. Following graduation, Mike moved to Arizona. Later he returned to Mason City, eventually residing in Des Moines, where he made his home the past 15 years.

Mike loved to play Frisbee golf, traveling the country playing tournaments with his friends, eventually attaining the status of professional disc golfer. He held a deep love of animals, especially his dachshund, Peanut.

Mike will be remembered for his generous spirit, easy smile, and kind heart. Mike made his wishes known by registering as an organ donor prior to his passing. As a result of his generosity, he was able to provide lifesaving organ transplants to at least three recipients.

He is survived by his parents, Chris Despenas, Lois Despenas, Mason City; brothers, David (Katie) Despenas, Mason City; Dana (Sarah) Despenas, Mason City; half-brother, Russell Despenas, Twin Lakes, MN; half-sister, Cindy (Bruce) Olson, Pine City, MN; Nieces, Cami Despenas, Brittney (Olson) Hancock; Nephews, Brett, Carter, and Hayden Despenas; great-niece, Cayli Hancock; special friend, Nancy Gilbert, Des Moines; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Chris and Susan Despenas and Mike and Lenora Schott; nephew, Nicholas Olson, and a niece, Aubrey Olson.
