Bessie Buelah Ruby, 89, of Mason City, formerly of Ventura, died Sunday (Jan. 14, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer "Sam" Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Kensett.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.

The family of Bessie Buelah Ruby has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery fund or to Hospice Care of Mason City, in her memory.

Bessie Buelah Ruby was born on July 21, 1906, in Mansfield, Mo., the daughter of Frank Albert and Margaret (Cline) Peebles.

She attended and received her education in Missouri before moving to Emmetsburg when she was 8 years old, finishing her education in the Emmetsburg school system.

She was united in marriage to Lester John Ruby on Feb. 10, 1925, in Spencer. He preceded her in death in 1988.

After their marriage, they farmed in the Spencer area and later moved to Hanlontown where they continued to farm until their retirement, moving to Ventura, close to the lake, which was Bessie's favorite home. The last seven years, she made her home at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

She was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, where she taught Sunday School for many years, and was also a member of the church circle.

She was a very loving mother and enjoyed her family most of all and her friends. She also enjoyed fishing and playing cards.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Russell Ruby and his wife, Ocella, of Mason City, and Jim Ruby and his wife, Betty,of Forest Hill, La.; three daughters, Dorothy Berschman and her husband, Joe, of Buffalo Center; Betty Johnson of Northwood, and Delores Rinden and her husband, Marvin, of Joice; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by two sons, Donald and Eldon Ruby; one son-in-law, Virgil Johnson; one grandson, Duane Ruby; two great-grandsons, Christopher Butter and Erin Johnson; three brothers, Lawrence, Ray and Jim; and four sisters, Esther, Verna, Edith and Lucy.
