JOHN J. CAHALAN
MASON CITY - John J. Cahalan, 53, of 435 21st St. S.W., died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000) following a farming accident.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and continue until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the east entrance of Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Newman High School or Hospice of North Iowa in John's name.
John was born on Feb. 7, 1946, in Mason City, one of six children of J. Paul and Mary (Brown) Cahalan. He was a 1964 graduate of Newman High School and then graduated with a degree in electronic engineering from Mason City Junior College in 1966. He was employed by IBM in the Waterloo and Keokuk plants from 1966 until 1972. In 1973, he began his farming and hog operations in the Dougherty and Rockwell areas.
John was united in marriage to Dianne DeRock on Jan. 13, 1968, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. To this union was born four children. They moved to Mason City three years ago and at that time joined St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He was also a member of the Lion's Club in Rockwell, a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of Pork Producers and a former member of the Newman School Board. He enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada and working. He considered farming a hobby and passion as well as a living. Everyone knows how well he liked to visit.
Those thankful in sharing John's life include his wife, Dianne, Mason City; two daughters, Maria Cahalan and her husband, Tom Paulsen, Iowa City and Michelle Cahalan, Chicago; two sons, William "Bill" and his wife, Michelle Cahalan, Chilton, Wis., and Tim Cahalan, Pensacola, Fla.; his two favorite grandsons, Adam and Benjamin Cahalan; one sister, Pauline Cahalan, Cedar Hill, Texas; three brothers, Tom Cahalan, Bryan, Texas, David and his wife Kathy, Clearwater, Fla., and Dan Cahalan, Lolo, Mont.; and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Martin Cahalan.
