In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to Don's family and will be donated to causes and organizations of their choice.

Don was born October 25, 1946, in Mason City, to Lorraine and Elmer Eddy of Swaledale. He attended Rockwell-Swaledale High School, graduating in 1965. He was a sports standout in basketball and baseball. He remains the all-time basketball point scorer in the school's history. He was a professional baseball player but his career was put on hold while he served his country in the United States Army.

After returning from his military duty, he returned to baseball, and in 1970 was drafted by the Chicago White Sox, playing for them in 1971 and 1972. After his baseball career ended, Don returned home to his family in Rockwell. He worked many years for Lang Distributing. He then spent the last 28 years of employment in car sales, first with Price Motors and ending his career with Schukei Chevrolet, retiring in 2012. Many remember him from his days in car sales. He was a friendly and honest salesman with a warm heart and a handshake that many still remember.

On September 10, 1966, Don married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Jane Losee. To this union two sons were born, Trent and Travis Eddy. Marilyn passed away on April 6, 1978. In 1980, he met a widow, Bernadette Hanna and her son, Charlie. They were wed on May 2, 1981, and together they blended their families.

Don first and foremost loved his family. A close second was baseball and golf. He competed in many golf tournaments with close friends, his sons and their friends, over a span of many years. He won his club championship seven times and also had seven holes-in-one. He especially loved golfing with his grandson, Tony. When able, he also loved attending his grandchildren's athletic events. He shared his knowledge and wisdom of baseball and golf with them and especially enjoyed helping young boys with their pitching, whenever asked. As a member of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, he helped coach summer youth camps put on by the MLBPAA in Des Moines. He also participated in charity golf tournaments “Swing with the Legends,” in Des Moines, which raised funds for the Iowa Special Olympics. During those outings he enjoyed seeing and catching up with other former major league players.

Don is survived by his wife, Bernadette “Bernie” Eddy of Rockwell; three sons, Trent Eddy of Byron, IL, Travis (Michelle) Eddy of Urbandale, IA and Charlie (Amy) Hanna of Apple Valley, MN; five grandchildren, Anthony Eddy, Tredon and Maslyn Eddy, Zoe Hanna, and Zachary Groschen; his beloved mother, Lorraine Eddy of Swaledale; a sister, Barb (Ken) Reimers of Rockwell; a sister-in-law, Cheryl Eddy of Story City, IA; nd many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Jane (Losee) Eddy; hs father, Elmer Eddy; a brother, Larry Eddy; his parents-in-law, Paulette and Manuel Garcia; a nephew, Joshua Garcia; and his maternal and paternal grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Don and Bernie have a special love for Dr. Sree Pilla from Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. Her kindness and compassion are unmeasured. They would also like to thank the nurses and aides at Mercy and Hospice of North Iowa. They also have an everlasting gratitude and appreciation for neighbors, Bill and Kim Bamrick, Richard and Naomi Gossweiler and Jeremy and Steph Ames. Without your love, help and support, it would have been a much lonelier road. Special gratitude goes to our three sons, who came home often to help care for their dad. Words cannot express our love and pride in the men you have become.

If Don could leave you with one message today, it would be to make sure you tell those you love, that you love them – everyday. He was very generous with “I love you.” You be too.
