CLEAR LAKE --- Verna A. Drake, 76, formerly of 804 First Ave. N., died Thursday (Oct. 24, 1996) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Verna A. Drake was born Oct. 9, 1920, at rural Forest City, the daughter of Valentine and Hazel (Heard) Kiefer. Verna lived in Clear Lake for 37 years. She moved to Good Shepherd in 1993.

When Verna first came to Clear Lake, she made custom woven rugs as a home business. After a few years, she began working at Hansen's Clothing Store in Clear Lake. She was next an employee of Singer Sewing Center in Mason City for many years. After her retirement from Singer, she did alterations for several Clear Lake clothing stores.

Verna enjoyed going to garage sales, and liked to do handy-work such as needlepoint and quilting. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and belonged to a women's circle.

Survivors include three children, Judith Whitesides, of Shelby, N.C.; Patricia Werstein and her husband, Glenn, of Swaledale; and Randel Drake and his wife, Marty, Annapolis, Md.; five grand- children, Wayne Whitesides, Daryl Whitesides and Roy Whitesides, of North Carolina; Dan Werstein of Clear Lake; and Angela Mireki and her husband, Louis, of Coos Bay, Ore.; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clifford Kiefer and his wife, Jewel, of Lime Springs, and Robert Kiefer and his wife, Marge, of Clear Lake; and three sisters, Ruth Erven of Britt; Wanda Johnson, Forest City; and Francis Adams and her husband, Robert, of Forest City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Drake, in 1975; and three brothers, Charles, Donald and Shirley Kiefer.
