Tuesday, March 08, 2011MASON CITY — LaVerna I. Colombo, 80, of 1625 South Hampshire Ave., died Saturday, (March 5, 2011) at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., Mason City with Pastor Art Zewert officiating. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
LaVerna’s family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday morning.
Memorials may be directed to the LaVerna I. Colombo Memorial Fund.
LaVerna was born on Oct. 8, 1930, in Rockford, the daughter of Cecil R. and Florence J. (Ward) Austin. She was united in marriage to Charles Phillip Colombo Sr. on Nov. 29, 1947 in Hampton.
LaVerna was a dedicated homemaker who raised six children. She later earned her GED and worked as a nurses aid for the Park Clinic. She was member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. LaVerna was proud of the home she and Charles built together in 1956 on South Hampshire. She followed several sports and sport’s teams including the NFL, NASCAR, Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs. She also enjoyed music and reading. LaVerna was known for making the best Italian spaghetti for each holiday meal. Her greatest joy was loving and spending time with her family.
LaVerna will be dearly missed by her five children, Sally (Jack) Meyerhofer of New Hampton, Cheri (Jim) Colombo-Clark of Mason City, Michael (Doris) Colombo of Mason City, Steven (Joyce) Colombo of Mason City, Susan (Greg) Hill of Clear Lake, and John (Vicki) Colombo Sr. of Mason City, eleven grandchildren, Mandy Meyerhofer and special friend, Keith Pals, Mike Colombo Jr., Tomi Jo Colombo, Missy Meyerhofer and fiancé Clark Conroy, Lisa Colombo, Jen (Tony) Papouchis, Angie (Brad) Hjelmeland, Jessica (Chad) Cahill, John Colombo Jr. and fiancé Dayle Gamerl, Amber Colombo and special friend Dennis Sellers and Audrey Hill. She is also survived by 19 great-grandchildren, three siblings, Harvey Austin of Cartersville, Doug (Ladonna) Prime of Kellerton and Hazel Raprager of Colorado and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ward of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charlie, a son, Chuck Colombo, a granddaughter, Amy Meyerhofer, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Austin, three brothers, Tom, Jim, and Richard Austin and two sisters, Delores Rinnels and Thelma Beightol.
