Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa
October 08, 2017CEDAR RAPIDS -- Richard “Dic” Gerald Chute of Cedar Rapids, passed away at home on October 4, 2017, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Visitation will be from 4 PM to 7 PM on Friday, October 13, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with a prayer service to begin at 4 PM. A funeral service will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Hiawatha on Saturday, October 14, at 10 AM.
Dic was born November 20, 1934, in Mason City, Iowa, to William Gerald and Esther Pearl Boggs Chute. He attended Mason City schools, graduating from Mason City High School in 1953. While in high school, he participated in journalism (Quill and Scroll), tennis, vocal music, earning All-State honors, and student government. After attending Mason City Junior College for one year, he transferred to Iowa State Teacher's College (University of Northern Iowa), graduating with a BA in Social Studies Education in 1957. While at ISTC, he was active in Men's Union, Tau Kappa Epsilon social fraternity and was a dorm counselor for freshmen students. Upon graduation he accepted a position teaching Language Arts at McKinley Junior High School in Cedar Rapids. He later transferred to George Washington Senior High School and taught Language Arts and Advanced Placement English. Dic received a Master's Degree in English Literature from the University of Northern Colorado in 1968. He continued his education throughout his teaching career, with involvement in workshops in gifted education at the Belin Institute in Iowa City, Carlton College, the University of Illinois, and evaluating Advanced Placement Examinations in San Antonio, Texas.
Dic treasured the cards, letters and visits he received from former students. He is remembered by them for vocabulary notebooks and tests, high expectations, the interest he took in students and his quick wit and sense of humor. Though Parkinson's Disease took a toll on his body in recent years, he still remembered each student who came to visit, including details about their classroom work.
He met his future wife, Orrine Ruth White while they were students at ISTC. They married on June 7, 1959 at St. Patrick's Church in Hampton, IA. Dic will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Orrine and their two children, Lisa Anne (Dr. Jeffrey) Zweerink of Glendora, CA and Thomas Richard Chute of New Orleans, LA, grandchildren, Daniel Gerald Zweerink of St. Joseph, MO, Sarah Grace Zweerink of Boston, MA; Mark David, Rebekah Joy, and Abigail Hope Zweerink, all of Glenora, CA. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jo Ann (Jake) Stahl of Lafayette, CA; an aunt, Mary Chute of Marion; and many cousins.
After retiring from the Cedar Rapids Community School District in 1996, Dic and Orrine enjoyed traveling to Europe with Italy, France and England being their favorite locales. They also enjoyed many theater trips to New York City, trips to Hawaii with friends but most special of all were trips to visit Lisa and Jeff's family in California and to attend and enjoy Tom's music in New Orleans.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Mercy Hospice, Parkinson's Disease Foundation or to Meth-Wick Community.
