THORNTON – Charles H. Blum, 92, of rural Thornton, Iowa, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Rockwell, Iowa, 121 Second St. N,, with Pastor Ken Livingston officiating. Interment will take place in the Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., on Friday, July 5, 2013, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. Memorials may be directed to the Charles Blum memorial fund in care of the family. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.majorericksonfuneralhome.com.

Charles Herman Blum was born Jan. 10, 1921, in rural Rockwell, the son of Charles Albert and Mabel (Zirbel) Blum. He attended country schools. On Dec. 17, 1944, Charles married Berniece Halfpap at her parent’s home in rural Alexander. They were blessed with four children: Roger Alan, Elaine Jean, Donna Kaye and Julie Joy. The couple farmed 2 years at Dougherty and 15 years south of Mason City before moving to Thornton in 1962, where they retired on the farm in 1985.

Charles was a member of First Baptist Church in Rockwell.

Charles leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 68 years: Berniece Blum of Thornton; 3 daughters: Elaine Bram and husband Steven of Thornton, Donna Steenhard and husband Wayne of Mason City, and Julie Devitt and husband Scott of Vista, Calif; 9 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 1 sister: June Blum Boyle of Waukesha, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents: C.A. and Mabel Blum; 1 son: Roger Alan Blum; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Rosemary Blum and Erma McIlrath; two brothers: Dean Blum and infant brother.
