MASON CITY -- Elsie M. Graney, 76, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Mason City, passed away on Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at the home of Kevin and Pam Graney in Rockford, Ill., after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. She passed on with her family and friends by her side and with the dignity she lived with throughout her life.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 2502 Jefferson Ave. South, Mason City, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City. Friends may call from 9:30 until service time on Saturday at the church.

The family of Elsie M. Graney has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Northern Illinois in her memory.

Elsie M. Graney was born on Aug. 13, 1924, in Crystal Lake, the daughter of Martin and Sada (Christenson) Nelson. She attended and received her education in the Crystal Lake School system, graduating from Crystal Lake High School. She also attended and graduated from Hamilton Business College.

She was united in marriage to Jack Clifton Graney on Sept. 15, 1946, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1997. Elsie and her husband spent summers in Iowa and winters in Tucson, Ariz., with her best friend, Samantha, her Yorkie. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mason City, Veterans of Foreign War and Ladies Auxiliary, she also worked for G4-OSS during World War II (the present day CIA) and retired from Culver Hahn/Design Lighting in Mason City. Elsie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend and was an avid golfer.

Left to cherish her memory include her sons, Kelly Graney and wife, Karen, of Hampton, Kevin Graney and wife, Pam, of Rockford, Ill.; daughter, Karla Strong and husband, Kent, of Aurora, Colo.; granddaughters, Alison Strong and Jacqueline Graney; grandsons, Matthew Strong, Kyle, Kasey and Kevin Graney; great-granddaughter, Taylor Graney; brother, Jim Nelson and wife, Gwen, of Tucson, Ariz.; sister, Alyee Chally of Algona; sister-in-law, Barbara Sasse of Minneapolis, Minn.; brother-in-law, Jerry Graney of Mason City; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, mother and father, and three sisters, Nita Peterson, Rae Chandler and Mildred Vandaworker.

A very sincere thanks to Pastor Richard J. Meier of Alpine Lutheran Church, the doctors and staff at the OSF Center of Cancer Care. A very special thanks to Arlene, Dee Dee and Kasha of OSF Home Health Care and NIHA, Debbie Roum and nurses, Pat, Pat, Regina and Debi for their tender loving care.
